Maybe I'm living too much in the '80s and have too much of an interest in bands that defined a certain genre of rock that I like to call "dirty rock", but what has happened to this kind of music? I was born in '75, so much many of my impressionable years were spent in the late '80s and early '90s, during which time I became a huge fan of GnR, Motley Crue, KISS, etc. I ended up buying all of their tapes (before CDs), but was always drawn to the early stuff like Appetite for Destruction, Looks that Kill, Dressed to Kill. etc.
I preferred the bands while they were still young, struggling and before they had money. They seemed to be edgier, had a chip on their shoulder, and much less polished than in their later years. I believe that in the early years is when bands make their best music. It's usually more honest and more telling of the day-to-day lives and experiences of struggling rock musicians who have no other goal in life than to play rock music. As a result, the content usually revolved around drinking, drugs, sex, strippers, groupies, and girls. In other words, the lifestyle of rock musicians, which to most people is a little "dirty".
Unfortunately for people who like this kind of music, the "dirtiness" is usually gone by the second or third CD. (Yeah, another song about rehab!) I'm not a rock historian, so I couldn't even try to speculate when dirty rock began, but it was certainly around in the time of Jimi Hendrix, The Doors and carried forward with Iggy Pop, Led Zeppelin, and the Sex Pistols. However, I'm more concerned about where it's gone. When I think of modern dirty rock, the only bands that come to mind are Louis XIV and Buckcherry, and they are a far cry from the bands I've mentioned above.
If you understand what I mean by "dirty rock", have an appreciation for it and can suggest some moderns bands that you think may fall under that genre, I'm all ears to give it a try. To be honest, I really want to get out of the '80s, but I find that I have to filter through so much CRAP to find good music these days.
